Takashi Horiuchi, D.Eng.

Dr. Horiuchi is presently a Professor in the Department of Clinical Engineering at Tohto University, Chiba, Japan after retirement from Mie University, Tsu, Japan, and Emeritus Professor in 2018. Dr. Horiuchi was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1953. He holds a B.S. Degree and M.S. Degree in Industrial Chemistry from Tokyo Science University (Tokyo, Japan) in 1976 and 1978, respectively, and D.Eng from the University of Tokyo, in 1987.

He was involved in artificial organ development in the Department of Artificial Organs and Organ Transplantation at the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Tokyo supervised by professors Dr. Tsunamasa Inou and Dr. Osamu Otsubo, where he experienced various specialties. His professional career started in the Department of Artificial Organs, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, in 1981 working with Dr. Paul S Malchesky and Dr. Yukihiko Nosé. In 1987, he was appointed lecturer and then associate professor in the Department of Precision Machinery Engineering at the University of Tokyo for a program in medical precision engineering. He moved to Toa University, Yamaguchi, Japan in 1993. He has focused on both research (154 publication papers and 182 presentations) and education (18 publications). His research has focused on blood purification, a wearable artificial kidney, membrane plasma fractionation, peritoneal dialysis, tissue engineering, peritoneal mass transport, and the construction of an artificial peritoneum. In education, he established new departments of clinical engineering at Toa University (2000~2004) and Tohto University (2018~2024). He has also contributed to publishing two major publications on artificial organs for the Japanese Society for Artificial Organs, namely “Artificial Organ, Now (in Japanese)” in 2003 and 2012 and “Artificial Organs Illustrated (in Japanese)” in 2007.
